Tanzania Youth Scholars (TYS)

Nearly 10% of Tanzanian youth are orphans and/or vulnerable children; and these young people lack opportunities to gain the necessary education and job training for their transition to a successful adulthood. Launched in May 2011, Tanzania Youth Scholars (TYS) is a five-year initiative funded by USAID through the Youth:Work mechanism. TYS will provide orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Tanzania with educational scholarships and livelihoods trainings and access to the job market, while equipping them with the health education and life skills necessary to improve their own health and well-being, and to make positive contributions within the workforce, their families, and their communities.

  • TYS will increase access to quality vocational and entrepreneurship training and secondary education opportunities for at least 1,800 orphans and vulnerable children ages 14 to 24 through provision of scholarships and accompanying support.
  • IYF will collaborate with the USAID Implementing Partners Group, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to strengthen systems for tracking and aggregating results of USAID's programs for orphans and vulnerable children in Tanzania
