Founded in 1992, kuleana is a world-recognized children’s rights organization based in Mwanza, Tanzania. Named for a Kiswahili word that means “to nurture one another,” kuleana seeks to address the serious problems facing at risk children.
Kuleana promotes and advocates children’s rights in Tanzania based primarily on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the African Charter on the Rights of the Child. Its activities focus in two significant areas. The first is its Street Children’s Centre (SCC), which houses and serves approximately 60 “street children.” The Centre is also engaged in researching “what works” for meeting their needs. The second focus is kuleana’s Advocacy Centre, a “think tank” which carries out advocacy, training, and identification of best practices. Key advocacy issues include gaining access, equity, and opportunity for primary school education; working with pregnant teenage girls; and ending corporal punishment in families and schools. |
