The Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD)

The Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) is Jordan's largest NGO dedicated to promoting comprehensive and sustainable development through the enhanced participation and empowerment of Jordanians. Established over 28 years ago, the Fund's has over 400 staff, of which eighty percent are based at the field level. JOHUD's greatest strength is its network of 50 community development centres (CDC) throughout the country,. Each CDC is run in partnership with local organizations, societies and councils, and the CDC activities are carried out by more than 8,000 volunteers, mainly women who form the women's committee at each centre and act as the liaison between management and community. At the CDC level, JOHUD provides services and programs in the areas of early childhood education, children's clubs, youth committees, women's committees, social, health, environment and general awareness educational programs, literacy classes, vocational and business skills training, credit lending schemes (low income and poor families), agricultural projects.

JOHUD also operates specialist services and programs through three main sub-units based in Amman.

The Queen Zein al-Sharaf Institute for Development (ZENID) provides training, research and consultancy services to government and NGOs nationally and in the Arab region. The ZENID programme for capacity building and specialist training includes community development, project management, participatory approaches, early childhood development and ToT. ZENID also implements national-level programs in women's empowerment, human rights and democracy.

JOHUD also operates an economic empowerment program through the Small Business Development Centre (SBDC). SBDC provides a diverse enterprise-related program of capacity building, training, and advice for poor people wishing to set up income generating activities. SBDC also operates a credit and loan operation to provide access to finance for potential entrepreneurs, especially women. SBDC is committed to identifying ways that young people can also develop entrepreneurial skills.

In 2004, the Princess Basma Youth Resource Centre (PBYRC) was launched to support youth-led initiatives. PBYRC is now Jordan's leading institution dedicated to youth-friendly development work, and is recognised regionally for its dynamic, innovative and empowering approach. PBYRC operates through networks of young people nationally and through the CDC youth club structures, enabling it to mobilise the resources of over 1000 trained youth-to-youth facilitators. PBYRC launched the first INTEL Computer Clubhouse to Jordan and leads in stimulating the creative use of ICT for development through its development media unit for film-making, graphics and print. The PBYRC will be the main focus for the IYF partnership activities with youth in Jordan.

JOHUD draws on its experience of development at grass roots level to influence the policy environment nationally. JOHUD works in partnership with, and hosts, two major national organizations: the National Population Commission (NPC) and the Jordanian National Commission for Women. JOHUD senior staff also sit on national policy-making bodies for Family Affairs and Social Development.

JOHUD promotes a rights based approach to all its operations and recognises the need to ensure that marginalised groups - the poor, women and youth, have a stronger voice in the development process. JOHUD supports integrated development solutions through a combination of direct service delivery, project implementation and advocacy for policy and process change. JOHUD works in partnership with national and international organizations to promote sustainable human development that increases opportunities and choice for all Jordanians.

A Board of Trustees heads the executive body of the JOHUD and it is chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal.
