| Since its founding in 1985, the Community Foundation of Puerto Rico (CFPR) has established itself as a leader in Puerto Rico’s philanthropic community. CFPR is dedicated to strengthening the sense of community among Puerto Ricans and promoting the self-directed development of not-for-profit organizations in such a way as to enable them to confront Puerto Rico’s most urgent socioeconomic problems.
The Foundation operates six major programs in housing, business-community relations, and youth. More than 27 percent of its grantmaking is directed to youth programs. Among its initiatives are:
- The Middle School Renewal Initiative (IREI)—aimed at lowering high (57 percent) dropout rates at the middle school level. The IREI program works with teachers in 14 middle schools, equipping them with new skills to provide more integral education, including arts, music, dance, radio, conflict resolution, and self-esteem programs.
- The Adolescent Center (CENAD)—a program working to provide alternatives for youth who have dropped out of school in very isolated, poor communities.
- JUVENISCOM—a university program of youth service at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazon which is linked to the Partnership for National Service (Americorps).
The Foundation also operates a regional Institute for the Development of Philanthropy (IDEFI), which provides training and technical assistance to philanthropic initiatives in other Caribbean countries. |
