Civil Society and NGOs in Oaxaca

There are relatively few NGOs in Oaxaca devoted to working with children and/or young people. The largest group of NGOs in the state are those with comprehensive programs to fight poverty. These include some that address issues affecting children and youth indirectly, as they improve living conditions for rural families and facilitate organization by the adults. Comparatively speaking, the amount of national and international resources invested in programs for children and/or youth is minimal.

The organizations working with children and young people are of four types:
  • youth groups with some association with the church;
  • NGOs that work with children/youth in difficult conditions (street children, the dis- abled);
  • NGOs that are applying or adapting methodologies for working with children/youth from other cities of Mexico, or from abroad; and
  • rural development NGOs with specific programs directed to children/youth.
