Youth Empowerment Program

In Sub-Saharan Africa, one in five young people is jobless. Supported by Microsoft, the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) seeks to change that statistic. Working with local implementing partners, YEP targets disadvantaged youth, ages 16 to 35. Participants receive training in information and communications technology (ICT), life skills, and entrepreneurship, and gain access to employment services. An initial grant of US$1 million from Microsoft has been leveraged to over US$6 million, which is now being used to expand youth employability activities within the targeted countries.

  • 10,000 youth trained in ICT and other marketable skills and assisted with job placement services, internships, community service, and entrepreneurship opportunities
  • 40,000 individuals (family members, youth) reached indirectly
  • At least 70% of beneficiaries placed in internships, jobs, income-generating self-employment, and/or voluntary community service
  • At least six local implementing organizations enhanced capacity in project design, curriculum and materials development, life skills training, and monitoring and evaluation
  • Evaluation of the impact of the comprehensive employability skills project model including a life skills component on the employability of Kenyan youth.
  • Regional and cross-organizational learning facilitated between local implementing partners
