Tanzania 21st Century (TZ21)

Learning

Launched in 2011 with funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and support from Creative Associates, Tanzania 21st Century (TZ21) provides technical and logistical assistance to the Tanzanian Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to improve child learning outcomes in lower primary school in Tanzania and Zanzibar.

In Mtawa and Zanzibar, comprehensive, localized e-curricula in reading, math and science are designed, and teachers are trained on how to apply the e-curricula through child-centered learning activities. Working in collaboration with IYF partners from the public and private sectors, this 5-year initiative also equips schools with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), an Education Management Information System (EMIS), as well as trainings on how to use them.

  • 42,000 children will utilize the e-curriculum and classroom-based ICTs.
  • 930 teachers and principals will be trained in the use of e-curriculum and in ICTs.
  • 50,000 children’s books will be distributed to schools.
  • 846 schools – all lower primary schools – in Mtwara and Zanzibar will benefit from a school development program that includes EMIS, as well as teacher skills training, with a particular focus on reading pedagogy.
