Tanzania Youth Scholars (TYS)

Learning
Work

Nearly 10% of Tanzanian youth are orphans and/or vulnerable children; and these young people lack opportunities to gain the necessary education and job training for their transition to a successful adulthood. Launched in May 2011, Tanzania Youth Scholars (TYS) is a five-year initiative funded by USAID through the Youth:Work mechanism. TYS will provide orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Tanzania with educational scholarships and livelihoods trainings in skills such as auto-body mechanics, tailoring, carpentry, and secretary services. In conjunction with IYF’s Planning for Life program, all TYS partners will integrate reproductive health and life skills training to improve young people’s skills to lead a healthy and productive life as well as make positive contributions within the workforce, their families, and their communities.

  • TYS will increase access to quality vocational and entrepreneurship training and secondary education opportunities for at least 1,800 orphans and vulnerable children ages 14 to 24 through provision of scholarships and accompanying support.
  • IYF will collaborate with the USAID Implementing Partners Group to provide education and vocational training for orphans and vulnerable children in Tanzania.
