Education & Employment Alliance (EEA)

Work

From 2005-2010, EEA improved and expanded education and employment opportunities for disadvantaged and unemployed youth in six countries in the Middle East and Asia. Supported by USAID and a wide array of corporate, foundation, and other donors, EEA forged partnerships on multiple levels (global, national, and local), leveraging the expertise and resources of diverse partners to lay the groundwork for sustaining and scaling up interventions. In India, EEA supported innovative educational technology initiatives to improve the learning outcomes of students. In other countries, it offered comprehensive learning packages, combining technical/vocational and life skills, entrepreneurship development, on-the-job training, and job placement or enterprise development support. Programs focused on addressing the unique needs of out-of-school and at-risk youth.

  • Partnerships forged with over 320 multi-sectoral organizations in support of 43 pilot projects benefitting over one million children and youth.
  • Over $12.7 million raised in cash and in-kind leverage contributions.
  • Alliance approach demonstrated improved program quality, relevance to private sector needs, and strong scalability and sustainability prospects.
  • Nearly 30,000 youth participated in employability skills training interventions:
    • 17,644 in Egypt (12,879 through university career development centers and 4,765 through youth centers);
    • 5,549 in Indonesia;
    • 2,238 in Morocco;
    • 1,406 in Pakistan;
    • 3,036 in the Philippines.
  • More than 26,000 youth completed training (87 percent completion rate).
  • High youth and employer satisfaction with the quality and relevance of training.
  • Of 8,580 graduates eligible for work, 4,801 gradates (56%) secured jobs or set up small businesses. Eighty percent of those entrepreneurs surveyed reported making profits.
