Empowering Africa's Young People Initiative (EAYPI)

Learning

Launched in 2005, the Empowering Africa’s Young People Initiative (EAYPI) helped prevent the spread of HIV among youth in Sub-Saharan Africa through scaling up programs proven to promote healthy behaviors. The five-year initiative, supported through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and administered by USAID, reached young people, ages 10 to 25, in three African countries. Through EAYPI, IYF provided support to 13 local youth-serving organizations to implement activities and provide technical assistance through on-site mentoring of technical personnel, workshops, seminars, as well as curricula and technical guidelines.

As of June 2010:

  • 32,948 peer educators and parents were trained in disseminating HIV prevention messages
  • 1.9 million parents and youth received life skill-based HIV prevention messages
  • HIV/AIDS prevention curricula for peer educators were developed in each country.  Topics include Growth and Development, Relationships, Sex & Sexuality, STIs, HIV/AIDS, Prevention and Risk Reduction, Behavior Change, Peer Education Skills, and Facilitation Skills
