Planning for Life

The Planning for Life project aims to integrate reproductive health and family planning into youth development programs to improve the health of young women and men ages 10-24. The program was launched in 2007 with support from USAID and World Learning. The Planning for Life model strengthens the capacity of IYF’s global partner network and IYF staff to integrate reproductive health (RH) and family planning (FP) as critical elements within youth development programs. After a successful first phase, the program was extended and Phase 2 will be completed in July 2012. Phase 2 seeks to translate, adapt, test, and integrate a package of 10 basic reproductive health lessons into partners’ life skills programs in six countries. A third phase of the program began in April 2012 to expand the Planning for Life model in Africa with two additional programs in Senegal and Tanzania and will be completed in February 2013.

By the end of the program’s first phase in 2009:

  • 2911 youth in India, the Philippines, and Tanzania received RH education integrated within livelihood, education, sports, and HIV programs.
  • 38 health providers were trained in youth-friendly services in the Philippines and Tanzania.

By July 2012, the end of the second phase:

  • 784 youth in Dominican Republic, India, Jordan, Kenya, Saint Lucia, and Sri Lanka will be educated on RH as an integrated component within livelihood, education, and leadership programs.
  • IYF’s RH curriculum will be translated into seven languages, adapted, tested, and integrated into pre-existing programs within these countries.
  • IYF Global Partners and staff increased capacity to integrate Reproductive Health into youth development program.

By early 2013, the end of the third phase:

  • 400 young people will have been trained in RH as part of existing employability programs in Senegal and Tanzania and 38 adults will have been trained to effectively deliver RH lessons to youth.
  • IYF’s RH curriculum will be adapted, tested and integrated into existing programs in these two countries.
