Baltimore, Maryland: The International Youth Foundation is excited to announce the creation of a new publication series that promotes best practices and innovative approaches in the youth development arena. Field Notes is a 4-page report, distributed electronically to more than 4,000 IYF contacts 8 to 10 times a year, that aims to capture valuable lessons and experiences from our programs on the ground. Using a short and lively format, the series targets practitioners, donors, and policy-makers alike. A wide range of programmatic topics will be covered, all identifying practical lessons and tips drawn from IYF-supported activities around the globe. Six Field Notes have been published to date.
“The International Youth Foundation, working with its partner organizations over the past 16 years, has accumulated some significant experience in terms of the challenges, rewards, and best practices of youth development work,” says William S. Reese, IYF’s president and CEO. “As a learning organization, we are pleased to share our insights around cutting-edge issues with the broader youth development community, through this new and timely publication series.”
“Implementing Life Skills for Employability” – [Field Notes December 2006] tells the story of Kimberly Prieto, who joined a gang in Mexico City when she was in high school, and illustrates the challenges and rewards of implementing a life skills and employability program that works with at-risk youth. “Influencing the National Youth Agenda” – [Field Notes October 2006] shares the experience of Life Routes, another life skills program in the United Kingdom that offers a model for how to successfully shape government policies. In “Engaging Alumni” – [Field Notes May 2006], IYF partner organizations working with Nokia around the world provide practical suggestions for how to effectively involve alumni in support of their ongoing programs.
