IYF and Nokia Launch New Initiatives to Help Young People Affected by the Tsunami Rebuild their Lives and Communities

Two years after the Asian tsunami devastated many communities, IYF and Nokia have announced the launch of several new projects to help young people in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Thailand with employability training and new business skills. Projects have been specially developed to meet the needs of each country.  The initiative is designed to help young people find jobs or set up small businesses, and thus create long-term livelihoods for themselves and their families.

"Young people were disproportionately affected by the tsunami, which resulted in the deaths of many parents and family members, interrupted educations, and lost livelihoods," said William S. Reese, IYF President and CEO. "As follow up to relief operations, there remains an urgent need for comprehensive programs that help young people regain confidence, acquire skills, and access either jobs or the loans needed to launch their own small businesses. We are pleased to be working with Nokia to address this critical need."
