Baltimore, Maryland, USA -- The International Youth Foundation (IYF) today announced a new partnership with Visteon Corporation (NYSE: VC), a leading full-service technology supplier to automotive manufacturers worldwide, to support two innovative youth programs in China and the Republic of Korea. The programs will benefit disadvantaged young people through education, technology training and social service support.
Through Visteon’s support in China, students and teachers in the Zhejiang province near Shanghai will benefit from a newly built school house, equipped with Internet-ready computer labs. This project will be managed by IYF's Partner, the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF), which is currently running a country-wide initiative focused on bringing primary school education – including the building of schools -- to China’s remote rural areas. Under the initiative, new “Hope Net Schools” are being built and equipped with computers, giving students access to advanced educational resources. Teachers go through an intense training course that will enable them better utilize online resources and incorporate computer and Internet skills into their teaching methodology.
In the Republic of Korea, thousands of abandoned and run-away children, many with severe emotional needs, receive counseling and care at non-governmental social welfare centers, many of which don’t receive government support.
The centers seek to protect and educate these children, but often do not have the resources or training to cope with the many challenges of an overburdened system. Through Kids&Future, IYF's Partner in the Republic of Korea, the Visteon-supported program will provide professional training and education to 160 practitioners who work in the centers, and develop programs that meet the emotional needs of more than 2,000 young people.
“Both these programs hit at the heart of what many young people need most: a healthy, safe environment in which to learn, access to resources that would not otherwise be available to them, and caring adults trained to address their needs,” said Bill Reese, Chief Operating Officer of IYF. “Visteon’s support of these programs, through our partnership, is helping to address these very critical needs.”
