The Slovak Republic is a parliamentary democracy. The head of
state is the president, Michal Ková, with restricted powers. The
government is led by the prime minister, Vladimír Me iar. The
most recent parliamentary elections were held on September 30,
and October 1, 1994. Me iar was re-elected at that time, having
been ousted by a no-confidence vote the previous March. Elections
are normally held every four years.
The results of the last election forced the winning party, Me
iar's Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, to form a coalition
with two other parties in order to establish a majority in
Parliament. Besides the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, the
Slovak National Party and the Workers Association of Slovakia are
represented in the current government.
